FMC Member Spotlight: Megan Spillman

Founding Moms Community member Megan Spillman started her business, Peace and Tidy, in 2019.

After experiencing several life transitions—including motherhood, career transitions, and multiple moves—all within a short period of time, she needed her home to feel peaceful. So she trained in the KonMari Method™ led by Master-level certified consultants and Marie Kondo and holds certificates in household management, residential organizing, and life transitions thanks to her membership in the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO).

Now, she helps others do the same: “I’m like a personal trainer for decluttering,” she says. “I hope to help people, especially busy moms, regain time, peace and energy through decluttering.”

What was the reason that you started your business?

I love what I do. I thought it would be a side hustle… and then the organization where I worked for 16+ years went through 2 reorganizations in 2 years. I realized my values and their values were no longer in alignment. It had been a terrific place to work, and I am incredibly grateful for the experience. So the side hustle became a main hustle.

Was there anyone who discouraged you from starting your own business or continuing to grow it?

I had a great deal of support from family, friends and former colleagues. Any discouragement actually came from others in the same field who said, don’t quit your day job. I felt like I had no choice. I tried hanging on in the day job, and it was crushing my soul.

If you could change one thing about the way mom entrepreneurs are perceived, what would it be?

Don’t assume mom entrepreneurs are doing this as a way to stay busy and earn some “extra” cash. That’s the reality for some moms, and that’s awesome. I am a single mom, and I am creating my own safety net and security as I go along.

What’s something good that’s happened to you in the past year?

Focusing on health this year was an important shift for me. I have worked out more consistently this year than at any other time in my life. I am meditating. I am not perfect, but this shift is real. My mom and maternal grandmother both died too early (their 40s and 50s), so at 42, I feel like it’s no longer an option to take health for granted.

What’s something that you turn to for biz inspiration?

What excites you most about entrepreneurship and where do you see things headed in the future?

Entrepreneurship excites me because of the opportunities it provides: to create a flexible schedule and to align yourself more closely with values and causes that light you up. Where is it headed? I wonder if more people will be choosing this path as they see that it’s possible.

Why did you join The Founding Moms Community? What do you like most about it?

One of the things I miss most about a traditional work environment is having a team of people to share ideas with, grow with, learn from, etc. I appreciate the occasional wackiness and humor.
